Short history of The Leftovers
LPHC Länsi-Pasila-Hardcore was a huge state of mind back in 1990 with a few teenagers – Misha, Wille & Nysty who have just been given a new place to play and practice at the local youth center Narri. At the same time, a couple years earlier formed hard-core-metal group Cencored (yes it was spelled wrong..), changed its name to The Leftovers. Cencoreds bass player Hannu made room for Olli who also got the idea of the new name for a band.
In early 90s The Leftovers made a couple 5 song demos in a Harju studio which was released as C-cassette and labeled Demo I and Demo II. First studio session was a prize from a band competition where The Leftovers was ranked in a best 10. The competition place was a legendary venue in Helsinki – Lepakko, what has been demolished since. One of the most memorable gigs in the 90’s with the band was at Helsinki Kaapelitehdas in december 1992 when the independent Finland turned 75 and there was a huge party and bands performed in a few stages. The audience was really wild and unstoppable at that gig. Unfortunately this was the last gig of the band’s bass playing founding member Olli (R.I.P.), but also first for the new member Juho (second guitar). Juho brought some great grunge & rock riffs to the band and was involved in influencing the change of style in a more grunge direction.
Core group was keeping the band rolling when bass players came and go. Band were performing mostly in Helsinki and wrote new songs till 1994, but in the end things just didn’t go much forward. So the band decided to go on a “short” break and were not very active all away from 1995 till 2014.
But then, one drunken night at the bar – the core group decided that the band should make a full vinyl record of all its old songs that have never been recorded before. However the bass player was still missing. One call in the middle of the night to Misha’s brother Markus – would he join the Leftovers? – and answer was right away – fuck yeah, sure!
The Leftovers were back after 20 years of silence.
Vinyl album was made and named 7 to Pasila to honor the neighbourhood where we met and grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. After that album, Leftovers released a single Neighbourhood of ’88 which was the band’s first new song after the 90’s. The idea for the song’s Pasila opening shouts came from the 7 to Pasila record release party when the audience started with Misha’s little impact on that support-shout. What a great synergy and we wanted to take that along to this song. The lyrics of the song are also a kind of English-Finnish which is the band’s internal humor and its own branch of art. So don’t worry if you don’t make any sense of it…
Last couple of years the band has been writing new stuff that is planned to be recorded and released in 2021 on a full new album. In august 2020 a kind of a middle project band recorded a two song EP – Control and Government Spies – what both are originally band’s early 90’s songs, but after few new arrangements have been now published.
So next – The Leftovers will go to the studio and put out some serious new trash metal tunes in a full album! So keep tuned and see ya all in 2021!
